Cubic Yards to Tons: Aggregate Conversion Guide

Convert volume to weight using the right bulk density and avoid short-ton versus metric-tonne mistakes.

Use bulk density, not solid rock density

A pile includes spaces between particles. Bulk density measures the material and those voids together. Solid mineral density is not the right conversion for a delivered load of loose aggregate.

The formula

US short tons = cubic yards × bulk density in US short tons per cubic yard. Reverse it by dividing tons by that density. One cubic yard is exactly 27 cubic feet; one US short ton is 2,000 pounds. A metric tonne is 1,000 kilograms.

Worked conversion

At an assumed 1.40 US tons/yd³, 5 yd³ weighs 7 US tons. At 1.50, it weighs 7.5 US tons. If ordering 10% extra, apply that allowance once: 5 × 1.10 × 1.40 = 7.7 US tons. Do not add the allowance again when comparing the result to a quote.

Price conversion

A $60/yd³ price divided by 1.40 US tons/yd³ is approximately $42.86 per US ton. This comparison only holds if both quotes use the same product, density and delivery conditions. When quoted by yard, calculate directly in yards to avoid unnecessary assumptions.

Sources and methodology

Our volume and weight formulas are documented in the calculation methodology. Material densities are editable planning assumptions, not measured product specifications. For road selection and drainage principles, see Penn State Extension. For sand product distinctions, see QUIKRETE Mason Sand and All-Purpose Sand. Follow local and manufacturer specifications.
